MOVIE BRIEFS
Celluloid sisterhood: The fourth annual Women in Film Festival (March 4-8) offers a programme of over 50 feature- and mid-length features, documentaries, mockumentaries, and shorts at the Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour) and UBC’s Chan Centre. Things get started with the Vancouver premiere of Ontario-based director Alison Reid’s comedy, The Baby Formula, about a same-sex couple who get pregnant using an experimental and controversial technique that can create sperm from a woman’s eggs. Also on the schedule are Vancouver filmmaker Carl Bessai’s examination of the dynamic between parents and children, Mothers&Daughters; and acclaimed director Kari Skogland’s IRA thriller, Fifty Dead Men Walking, which won the Vancouver International Film Festival’s Best Western Canadian Feature Film prize. Hosted this year by indie darling Molly Parker, the Spotlight Awards (which highlight the outstanding achievements of B.C. women and men in the industry) honours actress and cancer activist Babz Chula, and actress and producer Amanda Tapping (Stargate: SG1, Stargate: Atlantis, Sanctuary). Visit WomenInFilm.ca for complete schedule information.
