THE FRESH SHEET: Food & Drink Happenings (March 3)
The wine-centric Cru (1459 West Broadway, 604-677-4111, Cru.ca) is hosting Painted Rock Estate Winery owner John Skinner for a dinner in which chef Alana Peckham will pair four courses with Skinner’s premium Okanagan vintages. Sunday, March 7, 6:30 p.m. Tickets $85 per person; reserve by phone or online.
Yaletown’s Opus Hotel (350 Davie, 604-642-0557, OpusHotel.com) will roll out the red carpet on Oscar night (March 7), from 5 to 10 p.m., for a viewing party in the hotel bar that promises to offer guests “all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood while sipping Oscartinis, nibbling feature Oscar O-bite platters for $25, and mingling with Vancouver’s glamorous.” At Elixir Bistro, just off the Opus lobby, chef Don Letendre will be preparing a three-course Oscar Dinner for $30, with optional wine pairings for an additional $20.
Wealthy Cognac fans feeling flush after the Olympics may soon be fighting for their own bit of gold. A single 1.5-litre bottle of Rémy Martin’s tremendously ballyhooed Louis XIII Black Pearl has found its way into Canada — to, of all places, Aldesea, the duty-free operator at YVR, so how long it’ll stay in the country remains to be seen. Owners of the precious liquid include Snoop Dogg, Ted Turner, and Martha Stewart. The price? $34,000.
A surprise rebranding last week saw the West End’s 30-year-old Cafe de Paris become Le Bistro de Paris (751 Denman, 604-681-6550, LeBistroDeParis.com).
