THE FRESH SHEET: Food & Drink Happenings (March 11)

Given that it pales in comparison to the horrific loss of life in that country, the Chilean wine industry wasn’t something we immediately considered in the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit there on February 28. According to the Wines of Chile website, nearly 13 per cent of the country’s cellared wine was affected, translating to over $250 million in damages. Their release has some good news: the “supply to countries around the world will not be affected, and the 2010 harvest, which has begun in the northern wine regions, is proceeding as planned.” If you would like to contribute to relief efforts in Chile, visit RedCross.ca or call 1-800-418-1111.

Every Friday from 2 p.m. until close, customers who arrive at Yew Restaurant & Bar in the Four Seasons Hotel (791 W. Georgia, 604-692-4939, FourSeasons.com/vancouver/dining.html) dressed in pink — “just a touch or head-to-toe,” says the press release — will receive a complimentary Diva Bite courtesy of chef Oliver Beckert. (That’s a tasty treat, by the way; he won’t actually bite you). The bar’s resident mixologists will also be shaking up special matching cocktails.

The taste-tempting, diet-threatening Ganache Patisserie (1262 Homer, 604-899-1098, GanacheYaletown.com) is now open seven days a week — making it that much easier to satisfy your cravings for butter croissants, pain au chocolat, macarons, and all other manner of sugar-tastic carbo-loading. Drop in and pig out from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tues.-Fri.; 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Sat.; and 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun.-Mon.

...And speaking of pastry, the fabulous Baker’s Market relaunches March 20, recurring every Saturday through May 8. Find cookies, cakes, muffins, breads, and much more at this indoor event, held at 408 E. Kent Avenue South (rear entrance #115), 11 a.m.-3 p.m. More info (including a helpful YouTube video with directions): BakersMarket.com
