THE FRESH SHEET: Food & Drink Happenings (May 13)
As a complement to this week’s On the Plate feature about the 4th Annual Spot Prawn Festival, this week’s Fresh Sheet highlights some of the restaurant offerings tied to the event.
Refuel (1944 West 4th Ave, 604-288-7905, RefuelRestaurant.com) is once again hosting a weekly BC Spot Prawn Boil, allocating the 12 seats around the kitchen bar for the next three Saturdays (May 15, 22, and 29) for participating diners. Enjoy a three-course meal including watercress and new-potato salad; a huge boil of B.C. spot prawns served with house-made chorizo, clams, and spring vegetables; and a peanut parfait to finish. The cost is $65 per person. Call the restaurant to reserve.
Every night for the duration of the spot-prawn season, Maenam (1938 W. 4th, 604-730-5579, Maenam.ca) is offering a special $65 menu of eight courses packed with a full pound of the delectable crustaceans — everything from spot-prawn ceviche lit with coriander, mint, and nahm jim sauce, to a spot-prawn curry with pearl onions and toasted peanuts. If eight courses sounds daunting, you can order à la carte as well. Call the restaurant to reserve.
C Restaurant (2-1600 Howe, 604-681-1164, CRestaurant.com) is preparing spot prawns in several different ways, including poached and dressed with coconut and lime on Asian pear salad for $18.
West (2881 Granville, 604-738-8938, WestRestaurant.com) is serving spot prawns two ways: in a ravioli, and charcoal-grilled with sauce vierge and pickled rhubarb for $19.50.
